"Creating Green and Healthy Homes Policy for Greater Buffalo: An Environmental Justice Forum"
When: Friday, April 26, 2013, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Where: University at Buffalo's The Buffalo Clinical and Translational Research Center, 875 Ellicott Street, Buffalo NY 14203
Join local and national leaders to develop a sustainable strategy for green and healthy homes policy in Greater Buffalo. Our metropolitan area, like many nationwide, struggles with an aging and deteriorating housing stock as well as high poverty and unemployment rates. Many families are forced to live in homes that are unhealthy, unsafe and not energy efficient. Multiple local groups have been working hard on various aspects of these problems, and in recent years coordination has increased; however, unhealthy and environmentally unjust conditions persist for tens of thousands of residents.
Fundamental changes in policy are essential to a sustainable strategy that will practicably change lives. This event will bring local activists, academics, and community organizers together with federal experts in environmental justice to begin visioning a truly sustainable healthy homes strategy that can become a model for other cities.
Matthew Tejada, the new Director for the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Justice will open the forum, followed by other healthy homes experts from the Headquarters Offices of EPA, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.
